How to Grow
Sow seeds directly into well-drained, fertile soil in a warm, sunny position. Plant 2–3cm deep, spacing plants 30–50cm apart. Provide a trellis or fence for the climbing vines. Winged beans thrive in warm, humid conditions — ideal for tropical and subtropical Australian gardens (QLD, Northern NSW, NT). In cooler climates, grow in a warm, sheltered spot or greenhouse. Harvest pods when young and tender, around 15–20cm long, for the best flavour and crunch.
In the Kitchen
Winged beans (tua plu) are a Thai kitchen favourite — blanch and toss in yam tua plu (Thai winged bean salad) with coconut milk, dried shrimp, and roasted coconut for an authentic Thai salad. Stir-fry with garlic, oyster sauce, and chilli for a quick, nutritious side. Eat raw in salads for a fresh, crunchy addition. The entire plant is edible — pods, leaves, flowers, and roots.
