Grow Your Own Shanghai Bok Choy — Tender, Juicy & Fast Growing

One of the most popular and versatile Asian greens in the world, Minara Shanghai Bok Choy Seeds (No. 1110) produce beautiful, compact plants with bright green leaves and plump, juicy stems — mild, lightly sweet, and tender throughout. Fast-growing and easy to cultivate, Shanghai bok choy is a must-grow for any Asian cooking enthusiast in Australia.

Why You'll Love Growing These

  • Fast-growing — ready to harvest in as little as 30–45 days from sowing
  • 🌿 Tender, juicy stems — plump, crisp, and full of mild, lightly sweet flavour
  • 🌱 Compact, beautiful plants — the classic spoon-shaped Shanghai variety with vibrant green colour
  • Easy to grow anywhere — perfect for pots, balconies, raised beds, and garden beds
  • 🇹🇭 Authentic Asian variety — the Shanghai bok choy beloved across Thai, Chinese, and Japanese cooking

How to Grow

Sow seeds directly into well-drained, fertile soil or seed-raising mix in a sunny to partly shaded position. Plant 0.5–1cm deep, spacing 15–20cm apart for full-sized plants, or sow more densely for baby bok choy. Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist. Shanghai bok choy grows best in cooler conditions — ideal for Australian autumn, winter, and spring gardens (March–October). In tropical regions, grow during the cooler dry season. Harvest whole plants when mature, or pick outer leaves for a cut-and-come-again approach. Baby bok choy can be harvested at 15–20cm for a tender, delicate result.

In the Kitchen

Shanghai bok choy is incredibly versatile — stir-fry with garlic and oyster sauce for a classic, simple side dish that pairs with everything. Blanch whole and serve with oyster sauce and sesame oil for an elegant, clean presentation. Add to Thai clear soup (gaeng jued), ramen, pho, or congee for extra greens and body. Use in Chinese-style braised dishes with soy sauce and ginger. Steam alongside dim sum or dumplings for a fresh, healthy accompaniment. Also wonderful in Japanese hot pot (nabe) or Korean doenjang jjigae.
