Grow Your Own Thai Papaya — Large, Firm & Vibrantly Orange

From som tum to tropical fruit platters, papaya is one of the most iconic ingredients in Thai cuisine. Minara Papaya Seeds (No. 7108) produce large, firm papayas with vibrant orange flesh — sweet and fragrant when ripe, crisp and refreshing when green. A truly dual-purpose fruit that’s a must-grow for any Thai food lover in Australia.

Why You'll Love Growing These

  • 🍊 Large, firm fruit — impressive size with dense, flavourful flesh
  • 🍯 Vibrant orange flesh — rich colour, sweet aroma, and tropical flavour when ripe
  • 🌱 Dual-purpose variety — use green for som tum (Thai papaya salad) or let ripen for fresh eating
  • ☀️ Thrives in Australian climate — loves warm, sunny conditions perfect for tropical and subtropical regions
  • 🇹🇭 Authentic Thai variety — the papaya grown for traditional Thai cooking and fresh consumption

How to Grow

Sow seeds in seed-raising mix and transplant seedlings once established. Plant in a warm, sunny, sheltered position with well-drained, fertile soil. Papayas grow best in tropical and subtropical Australian climates (Queensland, Northern NSW, Northern Territory, WA) but can also be grown in warm temperate areas with frost protection. Water regularly and fertilise monthly for best fruit production. Harvest green for cooking or allow to fully ripen on the tree for sweet eating.

In the Kitchen

Green papaya is the star of som tum (Thai green papaya salad) — shredded and tossed with lime, fish sauce, chilli, and peanuts for Thailand’s most famous street food dish. Ripe papaya is perfect eaten fresh with a squeeze of lime, blended into smoothies, or served alongside sticky rice and coconut cream for a classic Thai dessert.
