Grow Your Own Thai Okra — Tender, Crisp & Fast Growing

A beloved vegetable across Thai, Indian, and Southeast Asian kitchens, Minara Okra Seeds (No. 2109) produce long, slender, vibrant green pods with a crisp texture and mild, earthy flavour — tender when harvested young, and a natural thickener for curries and soups when cooked. Fast-growing and easy to cultivate, okra thrives in Australia’s warm climate and is a rewarding crop for home gardeners.

Why You'll Love Growing These

  • Fast-growing — ready to harvest in as little as 50–60 days from sowing
  • 🌿 Long, tender green pods — crisp and mild when young, naturally thickening when cooked
  • ☀️ Loves the Australian heat — thrives in warm to hot conditions, perfect for tropical and subtropical gardens
  • 🌾 Continuously productive — harvest regularly to keep the plant producing throughout the season
  • 🇹🇭 Authentic Asian variety — the kra jiao (กระเจี๊ยบเขียว) used in Thai curries, stir-fries, and soups

How to Grow

Sow seeds directly into well-drained, fertile soil in a warm, sunny position. Soak seeds in water for 12–24 hours before planting to improve germination. Plant 2–3cm deep, spacing plants 30–45cm apart. Okra thrives in warm to hot Australian conditions from spring through summer — ideal for tropical and subtropical regions (QLD, NT, Northern NSW, WA). Water regularly and harvest pods frequently when 7–10cm long for the best tenderness. Leaving pods too long makes them tough and fibrous.

In the Kitchen

Okra (kra jiao) is wonderfully versatile — add to Thai red or green curry for a tender, flavourful vegetable that naturally thickens the sauce. Stir-fry with garlic, chilli, and oyster sauce for a quick Thai-style side dish. Use in Indian-style bhindi masala or sambar for a rich, spiced dish. Blanch briefly and serve with nam prik (Thai chilli dipping sauce) as a healthy snack. Grill or roast with olive oil and spices for a simple, delicious side. The natural mucilage makes okra an excellent thickener for soups and stews.
