Grow Your Own Kohlrabi — Sweet, Crisp & Wonderfully Versatile

A unique and underrated vegetable that’s beloved across Thai, Vietnamese, and European kitchens, Minara Kohlrabi Seeds (No. 5301) produce round, pale green bulbs with a sweet, crisp, apple-like texture — delicious eaten raw, lightly pickled, stir-fried, or added to soups. Easy to grow and fast to harvest, kohlrabi is a rewarding cool-season crop for Australian home gardens.

Why You'll Love Growing These

  • 🌱 Sweet, crisp texture — mild, apple-like flavour that’s refreshing raw and delicious cooked
  • Fast-growing — ready to harvest in as little as 50–60 days from sowing
  • 🌿 Easy to grow — compact plants perfect for garden beds, raised beds, and large pots
  • 🌟 Eat bulb and leaves — the whole plant is edible, leaves can be cooked like spinach
  • 🇹🇭 Popular in Asian cooking — kohlrabi is a favourite in Thai and Vietnamese salads and stir-fries

How to Grow

Sow seeds directly into well-drained, fertile soil in a sunny position. Plant 1–2cm deep, spacing 15–20cm apart. Water consistently to keep soil moist. Kohlrabi grows best in cool conditions — ideal for Australian autumn, winter, and spring gardens (March–October). Harvest when bulbs reach 5–8cm in diameter for the sweetest, most tender flavour — larger bulbs can become woody and less flavourful. The leaves can be harvested at any time and cooked like spinach or Asian greens.

In the Kitchen

Kohlrabi is wonderfully versatile — slice raw into Thai-style salads (yam) with lime dressing, chilli, and fresh herbs for a crisp, refreshing dish. Julienne and toss with Vietnamese-style dressing for a fresh, crunchy slaw. Stir-fry with garlic and oyster sauce for a quick, nutritious side. Add to Thai clear soup (gaeng jued) or miso soup for a mild, sweet flavour. Pickle in vinegar and sugar for a tangy condiment. Also delicious roasted with olive oil and herbs for a simple Western-style side.
