Grow Your Own Garland Chrysanthemum — Aromatic, Distinctive & Delicious

A uniquely aromatic leafy green with a devoted following across Thai, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean kitchens, Minara Garland Chrysanthemum Seeds (No. 1113) produce lush, fragrant greens with a distinctive herbal flavour — earthy, slightly bitter, and wonderfully aromatic. Known as tang oh (ตั้งโอ๋) in Thai and shungiku in Japanese, this cool-season green is a must-grow for hot pot lovers and Asian cooking enthusiasts in Australia.

Why You'll Love Growing These

  • 🌿 Distinctively aromatic — unique herbal fragrance and flavour unlike any other leafy green
  • Fast-growing — ready to harvest in as little as 30–40 days from sowing
  • ✂️ Cut-and-come-again — harvest regularly and the plant keeps producing throughout the cool season
  • 🌸 Beautiful dual-purpose plant — edible greens plus cheerful yellow daisy-like flowers if left to bloom
  • 🇹🇭 Authentic Asian variety — the tang oh beloved in Thai shabu shabu, Japanese hot pot, and Korean cuisine

How to Grow

Sow seeds directly into well-drained, fertile soil or seed-raising mix in a sunny to partly shaded position. Scatter seeds thinly and cover lightly with fine soil. Water gently and keep consistently moist. Garland chrysanthemum thrives in cool conditions — ideal for Australian autumn, winter, and spring gardens (March–October). Harvest young shoots and leaves when 15–25cm tall for the best flavour — older leaves become more bitter and strongly flavoured. Harvest before flowering for the most tender greens.

In the Kitchen

Garland chrysanthemum (tang oh) is the essential green for Thai and Japanese hot pot — add to shabu shabu, sukiyaki, or jaew hon (Lao hot pot) in the last minute of cooking for a fragrant, aromatic finish. Use in Thai clear soups for a distinctive herbal note. Stir-fry briefly with garlic and oyster sauce for a quick, flavourful side. Toss young leaves raw into salads for a bold, herbal flavour. Also wonderful in Korean jeon (savoury pancakes) or Japanese tempura for a crispy, aromatic treat.
