Grow Your Own Chinese Celery — Intensely Aromatic & Full of Flavour

Far more flavourful than Western celery, Minara Chinese Celery Seeds (No. 1119) produce slender, dark green stems with an intensely aromatic, herbaceous fragrance and bold, concentrated celery flavour — a little goes a long way. An essential herb and vegetable in Thai, Chinese, and Vietnamese cooking, Chinese celery is easy to grow and incredibly rewarding for any Asian cooking enthusiast in Australia.

Why You'll Love Growing These

  • 🌿 Intensely aromatic — far more fragrant and flavourful than Western celery, with a bold, concentrated taste
  • Fast-growing — ready to harvest in as little as 60–75 days from sowing
  • ✂️ Cut-and-come-again — harvest stems regularly and the plant keeps producing throughout the season
  • Easy to grow — great for pots, balconies, and garden beds in cooler Australian conditions
  • 🇹🇭 Authentic Asian variety — the khuen chai (ขึ้นฉ่าย) essential for Thai soups, stir-fries, and garnishes

How to Grow

Start seeds in seed-raising mix and transplant seedlings once established, or sow directly into moist, fertile soil in a partly shaded position. Chinese celery prefers consistent moisture and cooler growing conditions — ideal for Australian autumn, winter, and spring gardens (March–October). Space plants 15–20cm apart and water regularly to keep soil consistently moist. Harvest outer stems as needed, leaving the centre to continue growing. Use leaves and stems — both are edible and intensely flavourful.

In the Kitchen

Chinese celery (khuen chai) is a Thai kitchen essential — use as a fragrant garnish for tom yum, tom kha, and Thai clear soups (gaeng jued) for an authentic aromatic finish. Stir-fry with garlic, oyster sauce, and pork or seafood for a classic Thai-Chinese dish. Add to pad thai, fried rice, and noodle dishes for a bold herbal note. Use in Vietnamese pho as a fresh garnish alongside bean sprouts and basil. Finely chop and mix into Thai fish cakes (tod mun pla) or meatballs for fragrant depth.
