Grow Your Own Gai Lan — Thick-Stemmed, Mildly Sweet & Incredibly Versatile

One of the most popular and beloved Asian greens, Minara Chinese Broccoli Seeds (No. 1103) produce lush, deep green plants with thick, plump stems, broad leaves, and a mild, slightly sweet flavour with a gentle bitterness — the hallmark of authentic gai lan (kana / คะน้า). Fast-growing and easy to cultivate, gai lan is a must-grow for any Thai or Asian cooking enthusiast in Australia.

Why You'll Love Growing These

  • Fast-growing — ready to harvest in as little as 40–55 days from sowing
  • 🌿 Thick, plump stems — the prized part of gai lan, tender and full of flavour
  • 🍯 Mildly sweet with gentle bitterness — the classic gai lan flavour beloved across Thai and Chinese cooking
  • ✂️ Cut-and-come-again — harvest regularly to encourage continuous new growth
  • 🇹🇭 Authentic Thai & Chinese variety — kana, the essential green for pad kana moo krob and oyster sauce stir-fries

How to Grow

Sow seeds directly into well-drained, fertile soil in a sunny to partly shaded position. Plant 0.5–1cm deep, spacing 20–25cm apart for full-sized plants. Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist. Chinese broccoli grows best in cooler conditions — ideal for Australian autumn, winter, and spring gardens (March–October). In tropical regions, grow during the cooler dry season. Harvest stems when 25–35cm tall, cutting just above the lowest leaves to encourage vigorous regrowth. Harvest before flowering for the most tender stems.

In the Kitchen

Gai lan (kana) is a Thai and Chinese kitchen essential — stir-fry with oyster sauce and garlic for the classic pad kana side dish, one of the most ordered vegetables at Thai restaurants. Pair with crispy pork belly (pad kana moo krob) for an iconic Thai dish. Blanch and serve with oyster sauce and sesame oil for a clean, healthy side. Add to noodle soups, fried rice, or congee for extra greens and nutrition. Also wonderful in Chinese-style beef and gai lan stir-fry with ginger and soy sauce.
