Grow Your Own Thai Bottle Gourd — Long, Pale Green & Versatile
A classic Asian vegetable with a long culinary and cultural history, Minara Bottle Gourd Seeds (No. 4104) produce long, pale green gourds with mild, tender flesh — perfect for Thai and Asian cooking, and striking enough to use as a natural decoration. Easy to grow and highly productive in warm Australian conditions.
Why You'll Love Growing These
- 🌱 Long, elegant fruit — pale green, smooth skin with an impressive elongated shape
- 🍯 Mild, tender flesh — light, delicate flavour that absorbs sauces and broths beautifully
- 🌿 Easy & productive — vigorous vines that thrive in warm, sunny Australian gardens
- 🇹🇭 Authentic Asian variety — the nam tao (น้ำเต้า) used across Thai, Chinese, and Indian cooking
- 🌟 Dual purpose — eat young and tender, or dry mature gourds for use as natural containers or decoration
How to Grow
Sow seeds directly into well-drained, fertile soil in a warm, sunny position. Plant 2–3cm deep, spacing plants 100–150cm apart. Provide a strong trellis or pergola for the vigorous vines to climb — the heavy fruit will need good support. Bottle gourds thrive in warm Australian conditions from spring through summer. Harvest young (around 20–30cm) for the best eating quality, or leave to mature and dry on the vine for decorative use.
In the Kitchen
Bottle gourd (nam tao) is wonderfully versatile — use in Thai clear soup (gaeng jued) with minced pork and glass noodles for a light, nourishing dish. Stir-fry with garlic and oyster sauce for a simple side. Cook in Indian dal or curry for a hearty, comforting meal. The mild flesh pairs beautifully with bold Thai, Chinese, and South Asian seasonings and absorbs flavours deeply during slow cooking.
